The Ruined ‘Cetiya’

Map of Si Mahosot ancient town show the location of The Ruined Cetiya

The Cetiya or the ruined No.86 located in the vicinity of a religious centre of the ancient town of Si Mahosot, the large laterite base structure (25 x 40 metres) is regarded as the remains of an outstanding ‘Cetiya’, built in the 8th century CE. Here, the Cetiya or a sacred Buddhist precinct comprises the main stupa, a ritual chamber or a small hall of worship, a cloister for the ceremony of circling the stupa, and a porch with an entrance flanked by two lions.

Fragments of a bronze Buddha image of Dvaravati style found in situ suggests that it was consecrated by the Buddhists of the Dvaravati town.
